VPN IPv6 Leaks: How to Test and Fix Them

What is a VPN IPv6 leak?

A VPN leak occurs when some traffic bypasses the protected tunnel. An IPv6 leak specifically means that the device continues to reach destinations through the normal IPv6 connection while IPv4 traffic uses the VPN. A website may then see the VPN exit IPv4 address and the subscriber's ordinary IPv6 address in different requests.

This can happen because IPv4 and IPv6 are separate network paths. A VPN application that configures only an IPv4 tunnel has not automatically protected IPv6. Some products block IPv6 to avoid the issue, while others provide a full dual-stack tunnel with both address families.

How to test for an IPv6 leak

  1. Disconnect the VPN and note both the visible IPv4 and IPv6 addresses on the homepage.
  2. Connect the VPN and reload in a fresh browser tab.
  3. Check whether the visible IPv4 belongs to the VPN provider.
  4. Check whether an IPv6 address is present and whether it still belongs to the original Internet provider.
  5. Run the WebRTC leak test because browser peer-connection features can expose additional candidates.
  6. Repeat on every device and network you actually use.

A missing IPv6 result is not automatically a problem. It may mean the VPN intentionally blocks IPv6. The important question is whether any active route bypasses the expected protection.

Why IPv6 leaks happen

  • IPv4-only tunnel: the VPN changes the IPv4 default route but leaves the IPv6 default route untouched.
  • Reconnect race: the normal route becomes active briefly while the tunnel is reconnecting.
  • Split tunneling: selected applications or destinations intentionally bypass the tunnel.
  • Operating-system changes: sleep, network switching, or a new adapter can recreate routes after the VPN starts.
  • Browser behavior: WebRTC can test multiple interfaces and reveal candidates that ordinary page loading does not use.
  • Router VPN limitations: a router tunnel may cover IPv4 clients while the Internet provider delegates IPv6 directly to devices.

How to fix an IPv6 leak

The best fix is a VPN that supports IPv6 inside the tunnel and documents how it handles DNS and reconnects. If full IPv6 tunneling is unavailable, enable the product's IPv6 leak-protection or kill-switch option. This normally blocks IPv6 while connected.

Disabling IPv6 at the operating-system level can be a temporary diagnostic step, but it is not ideal as a permanent universal solution. IPv6 is a normal part of the modern Internet, and disabling it can break local discovery, corporate networks, or applications. Prefer a correct VPN configuration.

After every change, disconnect and reconnect, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot, wake the device from sleep, and test again. A setup that works only immediately after installation is not sufficient.

DNS leaks and IPv6 leaks are different

A DNS leak means name-resolution requests go to an unexpected resolver. An IPv6 leak means traffic uses an unprotected IPv6 path. They can happen together or separately. Check the visible addresses, DNS resolver behavior, and WebRTC candidates rather than relying on one green badge.
