Change My IP Address

Various Ways to Change your IP Address

Your IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier for your computer when using a network to access the internet. Your network provider supplies it to you. Your IP address is essential for accessing the internet, however it can be used to identify where you are in the world, which may also be giving away your home address because that is probably where you are paying for your connection, and it can be used by sites to prevent you from accessing them. Therefore, sometimes, you might actively want to change or hide your IP address, or perhaps you just need to fix connectivity issues — here are a few ways that you can.

Proxy Servers

Try using a proxy server. There are plenty of websites containing lists of free proxies available for use. Usually when you access a website, your network provider makes the connection for you, revealing your IP address. With a proxy server, your network provider connects you as usual to the proxy site, but the proxy then connects you to your desired web location using a fake IP address. It is important to research the websites and severs before using them as they are a free service, so not all of them will be honest and reliable.

Windows Operatig System

For a windows system, you can also try accessing Command Prompt by searching for it in programs, right clicking, and select “run as administrator” or you might see “Command Prompt (admin)”. Once clicked, you will get a message asking if you want to allow the app to make changes to your device. Click “yes”. Now you have Administrator: Command Prompt open, enter the command ipconfig /release .This makes your computer forget it’s IP address. Follow this command with ipconfig /renew, which refreshes the address.

Linux

A similar thing can be done on a Linux system by accessing the Command Line. Enter the command ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.x.x netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.x up to change the IP address, entering your own settings for the IP and netmask. Set your own default gateway by entering route add default gw xxx.xxx.x.x, and set your DNS server with the command echo “nameserver 4.2.2.2” > /etc/resolv.conf, or your preferred DNS setting, and you’re all set.

Windows

Alternatively for Windows you can access the Control Panel, click “Network and Internet”, then “Add a wireless device to the network”. From the menu click “Change adapter settings”. The page will show a computer icon with your networks, click it then select “Change settings of this connection” from the top menu bar. Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” from the list by clicking the text, not the check box, then go to “Properties”. To enter your own IP address, check the “Use the following IP address” box, and enter your own settings. Do the same for the “Use the following DNS server addresses” box. Make sure to check the “Validate settings upon exit” box before clicking “Okay”.

You are sure to find success with one or more of these methods to change your IP address, whether you use a Windows or a Linux device.
