Plain-English help

Hostname to IP FAQ for beginners

Why does one hostname have many IPs?

Large services use load balancing, content delivery networks and regional infrastructure for availability and speed.

Why do results change?

DNS answers are cached for a limited time and can vary by location, resolver and traffic-routing policy.

What is the difference between A and AAAA?

A records contain IPv4 addresses. AAAA records contain IPv6 addresses.

Does the IP reveal the website owner?

Not reliably. Shared hosting and CDNs can place many unrelated sites on the same network or address.
