IP lookup FAQ for beginners

Can an IP lookup show an exact home address?

No. IP geolocation is approximate and usually identifies a country, region or city area rather than a street or person.

Why is the city sometimes wrong?

Mobile networks, VPNs, carrier gateways and ISP routing can make an address appear in a different city from the device using it.

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that announces an IP range to the internet, such as an ISP, company or cloud provider.

Why does my IP change?

Many providers assign dynamic addresses. Reconnecting a router, changing networks or enabling a VPN can produce a new public IP.
